Having Tough Conversations with Positive Outcomes

Program Description
Building our capacity to meaningfully, empathetically and respectfully engage in difficult dialogues is one of the most pressing issues of our times. Stanford is piloting new innovations in experiential learning
for effectively engaging difference with empathy, compassion and cultural humility. Come experience our new model for engaging difference where we will actually have fun talking about hard topics.

Speaker's Biography
Dereca Blackmon, ‘91, is the associate dean and director of the Diversity and First Generation Office and also co-teaches Intergroup Communication. She is a passionate speaker, trainer and national expert on topics of diversity, equity and inclusion. For over 25 years she has consulted with a wide variety of corporate, educational, nonprofit and community-based groups to facilitate “uncommon conversations” on issues of race, gender, class, sexual orientation and other issues of social justice. On campus, Dereca has introduced groundbreaking work on authentic engagement, intergroup dialogue, and first-generation and low-income student support services.

This event is sponsored by the Stanford Alumni Association in partnership with Stanford Peninsula Alumni, Stanford Club of San Francisco, Stanford Professional Women, Stanford Black Alumni Assocation-Northern California, Stanford Women's Club of the East Bay, Stanford Women's Impact Network and Stanford Chicano/Latino Alumni Association of Northern California.
