Stanford Associates Awards
Stanford Associates presents awards to recognize excellence in volunteer service to the University. Individuals who have demonstrated excellence in volunteer service are nominated by Stanford staff members in the fall of each year. The Stanford Associates Board of Governors reviews the nominations and selects award winners. The following awards are given:
Gold Spike Award
"For exceptional volunteer leadership service."
ROBERTA BOWMAN DENNING, ’75, MBA ’78, has advanced a vision for Stanford as a place where the arts are fundamental, vibrant, and distinctive. A founder of the Stanford Arts Advisory Council and chair of the Humanities and Sciences Council, Roberta is an unwavering advocate for the role of the arts and the humanities across the breadth of the university.
JOHN GOLDMAN, MBA ’75, is a volunteer leader whose generosity knows no bounds — from Stanford Hospital to the Graduate School of Business and beyond. Through his leadership, the university has advanced its work in the arts, athletics, and undergraduate education. John’s commitment to the university for four decades is truly remarkable and his impact on Stanford is indelible.

SALLY POLLOCK LANNIN, ’78, epitomizes the virtues of an exemplary alumni leader: high energy, commitment to excellence, readiness to serve, and natural leadership skills. By strengthening the Stanford community in Minnesota, playing a lead role for the Undergraduate Admissions OVAL program, and chairing the SAA’s Board of Directors, Sally has made a meaningful difference for the university.
ROWLAND “REB” REBELE, ’51, brings nearly seven decades of devotion, generosity, and service to Stanford. Active with the Office of Development and committed to Stanford’s need blind admission policy, Reb served as a chief major gift volunteer for the Centennial Campaign and recently led class giving efforts for the class of ’51, breaking a Stanford Fund record for his 65th reunion.
MIRIAM RIVERA, ’86, AM ’89, MBA ’94, JD ’95, is a champion of financial aid and diversity who leads with compassion. While serving on the Board of Trustees and the GSB Advisory Board, she provided strategic counsel on vital issues. Her leadership has advanced university initiatives that greatly benefit the Stanford community.
Degree of Uncommon Man & Uncommon Woman

Tashia and John P. Morgridge, MBA ’57. The breadth and depth of Tashia and John Morgridge’s service to Stanford is truly uncommon. As chairman (now emeritus) of Cisco Systems, John has rallied business school classmates, advised deans, taught students, provided leadership training for faculty and staff, and shaped programs in entrepreneurship and social innovation. Together, he and Tashia helped lead the university’s revitalization of undergraduate programs, especially in public service. Tashia’s experience as a teacher has informed their commitment to Stanford’s efforts to improve K–12 education, which they have championed through the Haas Center for Public Service, the Graduate School of Education, and the East Palo Alto Academy. Campus-wide, John has advanced multidisciplinary collaboration by leading the Stanford Graduate Fellowships campaign and, as a member of the university’s board of trustees, development of the Science, Engineering, and Medicine Campus. Today, Tashia and John are helping to reshape Stanford healthcare as a local service and a national model.
Governors' Award
The Governors' Award (formerly the "Stanford Associates Award"), was established in 1980. A maximum of 15 awards are given annually to Stanford Associates members to honor exemplary volunteer service to the University over an extended period. These individuals are honored for their ongoing and uncommon gift of self, time and energy to the University. Governors Awards are presented to honorees at the Stanford Associates Award Ceremony held on campus each spring.
Award of Merit
Established in 1975, the Award of Merit (formerly the "Outstanding Achievement Award"), is given for exceptional volunteer service during a given period, usually one year. Bestowed for a single specific achievement, up to 25 awards are given annually to individuals or groups for their demonstrated initiative, thoroughness and enthusiasm. Awards of Merit are presented to honorees at the Stanford Associates Award Ceremony held on campus each spring.
