This September we'll be discussing two distinct documentaries focused on transgender activist and artist Marsha P. Johnson.

Happy Birthday, Marsha! is a 15 minute short written and directed by Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel. It focuses on Marsha P. Johnson's (played by Mya Taylor) life in the hours before igniting the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, and was a community driven production where "...trans women of color are [were] on both sides of the camera".

The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson by David France (director of How to Survive a Plague) weaves together archival footage with interviews from friends and community activists to connect her legacy directly to the present day violence faced by trans women of color.

Watch the films on your own and then join us for our September discussion. Thus far discussions have been small informal gatherings so feel free to join even if you haven't had the chance to finish both or if it's been a while!

This event is co-sponsored by the Stanford National Black Alumni Association (https://www.stanfordblackalumni.org/)
