Project participants will plant a garden designed for the enjoyment of the residents of St. Mary's Home, a nursing home for the elderly poor. While some of the gardening will be ground level, there are also containers and raised planters that can be more easily enjoyed by residents with physical limitations. Alums will also prepare a few raised beds for residents who want to garden but are in wheelchairs or have trouble stooping or bending.

St. Mary's Home provides skilled nursing care to 76 residents. Next door are 50 apartments for independent living. There is also a day program for elderly poor living in the neighborhood. St. Mary's Home is run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, an order of Roman Catholic nuns that take a special vow to care for the elderly poor. The sisters provide a loving home where people of all religions feel like family and are treated with dignity and respect.

Stanford volunteers are invited to have lunch with the residents after our morning of gardening.

This project welcomes participants aged 10 and older.
