Join us at the lovely Mexican Cultural Institute as WDCSA hosts Joaquin and Julián Castro ‘96, who graduated with honors from Stanford and received their Juris Doctorates from Harvard. Your attendance at this event will help warmly welcome Representative Castro and Mayor Castro into the Washington, DC Stanford alumni community.

Joaquin Castro was elected last fall to to the US House of Representatives from San Antonio, Texas after serving five terms in the Texas State Legislature. He was chosen co-President of the House freshman Democrats and named Assistant Democratic Whip.

Joaquin’s twin brother Julián is the second-term Mayor of San Antonio, the  youngest mayor of a Top 50 American City, and was one of Time Magazine’s "40 under 40" list of rising stars in American politics.  He was earlier the youngest elected city councilman in San Antonio history.  Introduced by his brother Joaquin, Mayor Castro gave the keynote address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

The Mexican Cultural Institute, a Washington DC Historic Landmark, is a Beaux Arts mansion that served as the Mexican Embassy from 1921 to 1990, and now shares Mexican art and culture with the Washington community. In addition to beautiful antiques, it contains an arresting three-story mural painted by Roberto Creva del Rio in 1933, depicting colorful Mexican traditions.  The celebrated Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes lived in the mansion as a child when his father was a diplomat and went to school in the neighborhood.

Guest moderator for the evening will be Pete Williams ’74, Justice Correspondent for NBC News.

WDCSA thanks the Stanford Alumni Association and Stanford in Washington, whose financial support have enabled us to offer this event.

Refreshments will be provided. A cash bar will be available.

Space is limited, so please sign up by June 1.
